San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance put on a show in his preseason debut against the Kansas City Chiefs with an impressive TD pass.

Trey Lance made his NFL preseason debut on Saturday, starting off his career with a splash.

Jimmy Garoppolo got the start, but Lance took over after one series. He gave 49ers fans a sign of why he was selected No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

On the first play of his second drive, Lance dropped a perfect pass over the top to Trent Sherfield for an 80-yard touchdown.

San Francisco will look at that play with mouths drooling. The play design was perfect, with play-action freezing the defense and a roll-out giving Lance plenty of room to operate. The execution that followed was even better as the rookie QB found his receiver downfield.

Trey Lance produced big plays in his 49ers preseason debut

It was a very nice way to bounce back from what had been a difficult opening drive. Lance’s first career attempt fell incomplete and he took a sack on third down to end the drive.

Later on in the game, Lance engineered another impressive highlight for his reel. He hit tight end Charlie Woerner for a 34-yard gain from out of his own endzone.

Those plays were exceedingly encouraging, though Lance’s overall numbers from the first half demonstrate that he still has some developing to do. He went 5-of-12 for 128 yards while taking four sacks.

The 49ers went into halftime leading 9-7 over the Chiefs.

As with all of the rookie quarterbacks making their debuts this weekend, the temptation to overreact is strong. Lance will have many more chances this preseason to make his case to be QB1 on opening day.
