NFL Twitter trolled Jimmy Garoppolo heavily after every Trey Lance completion
By Mark Powell
The San Francisco 49ers might have a quarterback controversy on their hands after Trey Lance played well in his preseason debut.
Jimmy Garoppolo is the present, while Lance is the future. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan haven’t kept that fact a secret since selecting Lance with the third-overall pick in late April.
What they did not expect was for Lance to out-perform Garoppolo in camp, and make the 49ers offense look so spectacular in game action. His lone touchdown pass — an 80-plus yard deep ball to Trent Sherfield — showed exactly what Lance can do when the 49ers move the pocket.
Now,
on the day. He had his accuracy issues, while Garoppolo completed all three of his pass attempts. However, it was more the potential of what the 49ers offense could be with Lance under center that tantalized fans on social media.

Garoppolo came about one deep ball away from winning a Super Bowl, so let’s not pretend he’s a scrub. But his mobility and arm strength is not a plus, and he deserves to play for a contender that respect his abilities as a passer, and a fan base that wants him as their starting quarterback.
There were more, but it’s safe to say Niners fans didn’t watch Lance’s full performance. The rookie looked uncomfortable at times in the pocket and failed to find his timing in the offense. In a sense, he played like it was his first career start.
Garoppolo knows this offense and, for now, is the better quarterback to lead the 49ers to their ultimate goal — the Lombardi Trophy.
