Fabio Jakobsen wins 2021 La Vuelta a Espana Stage 8
Fabio Jakobsen won Stage 8 at the 2021 La Vuelta a Espana on August 21 also taking back the lead for sprint points and the green jersey.
Fabio Jakobsen won the 2021 La Vuelta a Espana’s Stage 8 on August 21 from Santa Pola to La Manga del Mar Menor.
Jakobsen now has won two La Vuelta a Espana stages this year, adding to his two La Vuelta a Espana stage wins in 2019 for a total of four.
Stage 8 saw a three man breakaway that lasted for most of the race with Team Caja Rural’s Bargues, Team Burgos BH’s Okamik and Team Euskadi’s Iturria all working together to keep ahead of the peloton before getting caught at around twenty six kilometres to go.
Crosswinds broke up the peloton several times but twists and turns in the course, including a doubling back around the lagoon and back towards the finish line, gave chasing groups chances to rejoin the peloton.
Team Israel Start-Up Nation found themselves down three riders in total after Davide Cimolai abandoned the race during the stage.
Mads Wurtsz Schmidt and Alexander Cataford have already dropped out of the race.
Team Education First – Nippo confirmed that Hugh Carthy abandoned the race partway through Stage 7 with the team now aiming for stage wins, one of which has been won by Magnus Cort Neilsen.

The finish saw a headwind that meant that most of the peloton and its general contenders and their lead out riders rode together at an average speed of 57 kilometres per hour up until within the final kilometre.
Fellow Deceuninck – Quickstep rider Florian Senechal led Jakobsen out till the final few metres before pulling off to let him sprint across the finish line.
Jakobsen then managed to win by approximately a bike length in front of Team DSM’s Alberto Dainese and Team Alpecin-Fenix’s Jasper Philipsen.
2021 La Vuelta a Espana overall standings after Stage 8
This is also the last sprint stage till Stage 13 which could lead to a change in the overall standings as the climbers in each team come into play from tomorrow’s stage onwards.
The current overall standings remain the same.
While Jakobsen takes back the green jersey for sprint points, defending champion from last year, Primoz Roglic retains the overall lead by eight seconds and the red jersey.
Team Ineos Grenadiers’ Columbian rider Egan Bernal retains the best young rider jersey while Pablo Sivakov has the jersey for the most mountain climb points.
The most combative rider of the stage was awarded to Team Caja Rural’s Bargues.
