The Detroit Tigers just gave up a walk-off single to a Cardinals player with a made-up name. Yes, we’re serious.

Lars Nootbaar is not a real name. If anything, it’s auto-generated by MLB the Show, and we’re all in a simulation.

And yet, Lars Nootbaar just hit a walk-off to boost the Cardinals over the Tigers.

The Cardinals couldn’t even tweet out his actual name, because it does not exist.

Lars Nootbaar was the hero for the Cardinals against the Tigers

The Tigers were in a position to get beat by a guy named Nootbaar because of a questionable 10th inning. Michael Fulmer intentionally walked Paul Goldschmidt, who had hit two home runs on the day, to start the inning. Then Goldschmidt and Tommy Edman stole bases to set up an intentional walk of Nolan Arenado. With the bases loaded, Nootbaar came to the plate and took his chance to be a hero.

Nootbaar is having a memorable debut in the majors. He earned his promotion in June and his first career hit was a triple against the Tigers. He’s hit three home runs and is batting .262/.338/.462.

Detroit fell to 61-67 with the loss, splitting the two-game series with St. Louis.

The Cardinals are now 64-61 and four games out of the wild card in the National League.
