Mets: Noah Syndergaard’s return delayed due to COVID-19
By Mark Powell
New York Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard has tested positive for COVID-19, despite being vaccinated against the virus.
Syndergaard was scheduled to make a rehab start in Brooklyn for the Cyclones on Sunday, but that process has been delayed, for now, as he’s tested positive for COVID-19. Luis Rojas described the delay as non-baseball related.
His first rehab start went relatively well, as he threw 16 pitches in Brooklyn. Syndergaard called the outing a relief, given it was his first start in months. He hopes of make an impact in Queens before the end of the season.
“It’s definitely a sigh of relief and a step in the right direction,” he said.
New York Mets: Noah Syndergaard a free agent after this season
Thor is scheduled to be a free agent after this season, but given his injury concern it makes a lot of sense for him to stay with the Mets for now. Perhaps a short-term, incentive-laden contract would make a lot of sense for both sides as Syndergaard continues to recover from Tommy John surgery.
For now, his focus is on this season.
