With Cam Newton being released by the New England Patriots, one team who could have interest in him is the Pittsburgh Steelers with him backing up Ben Roethlisberger.

Now that the Cam Newton era of New England Patriots football is over with and done, one team that might make some sense for him to go to is the Pittsburgh Steelers so that he can back up Ben Roethlisberger.

Since he was coming out of Auburn over a decade ago, Newton has often been compared to Big Ben. They are big, strong and physical players who play the game of football in a similar manner. So while it would make sense to have a comparable player serving as your starter’s backup, there is one big issue concerning Newton: He is not vaccinated, and that may keep him off the Steelers.

With cut day having arrived, vaccination status has had a more profound impact than we expected.

Cam Newton released: Could he back up Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh?

At this stage of his career, is Newton a better quarterback than Dwayne Haskins or Mason Rudolph?

Yes, as he was in contention for the Patriots starting job before losing out to Mac Jones.

However, Newton is no longer the NFL MVP-level player he was in his prime with the Carolina Panthers.

Simply, teams are not going to make an exception for him or other unvaccinated players.

So what is Newton to do now that he is out of a job? He could sit back and wait for a quarterback-desperate team to be in dire need of his services. He could also take the time to get vaccinated so he will not be a training camp casualty like he was with the Patriots.

Either way, the only way Newton makes his way onto the Steelers is if he gets the vaccine. Otherwise, he is not going there.

While Newton would be a terrific backup to Roethlisberger, vaccination status hurts his viability.
