Mack Brown and the No. 10-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels lost their opening game of the season to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

The Heels came into the season perhaps ranked ahead from where they are as a program right now. While Brown and Co. have made strides and undoubtedly won the offseason, recruiting can only take you so far.

Player development is everything, and the Heels lost a ton of talent in the receiving corps and up front. North Carolina’s offensive line looked less than ideal on the road, and that’s something the Heels can ill-afford for a group tasked to protect future first-round draft pick Sam Howell.

Howell can only do so much, and he and the UNC offense was a let-down against Justin Fuente and VaTech.

Mack Brown age

Mack Brown is 70 years old and still coaching at the highest level of the ACC, which is incredibly impressive when you think about it.

North Carolina football: Fans were concerned about Mack Brown

Brown looked rather disheveled on the sidelines after Howell’s late-game interception sealed certain defeat.

As a result, social media at first trolled Brown, but then appeared genuinely concerned about his safety.

Brown is likely fine, and while we appreciate the concern, losing your opening game cannot be pleasant for any college football coach. This is especially true when you coach the No. 10 team in the country.
