The kicker for the Mercer Bears had a hilarious tweet after he missed an extra point that would have given the team a 70-0 win.

College football dominated Thursday night coverage, and for good reason. Ohio State fended off a tough challenge from Minnesota in a 45-31 victory, while the UCF Knights mounted an impressive second half comeback against Boise State. But everyone is talking about the score of the Mercer-Point University game.

The Mercer Bears defeated the Point University Skyhawks, and it could have been by the score of 70-0, but that was all for naught after kicker Caleb Dowden missed an extra point in the fourth quarter after it went wide right.

With the score officially going down as 69-0 for the Bears, Dowden responded to the countless tweet by saying that he “had to take one for the team.”

The game was not even close, as Mercer accumulated 778 total yards of offense, including 539 rushing yards on 59 carries. Oh, and the Bears tallied seven rushing touchdowns on the night. Additionally, the Bears completed 18-of-25 of their passing attempts for 239 yards, three touchdowns and one interception between Carter Peevey, Fred Payton and Dylan Fromm.

Mercer earned its first win of the 2021 season by 69-0, which many on social media would call “nice.”
