Mac Jones’ ability to pick up the New England Patriots’ playbook made Cam Newton expendable.

Not only did Cam Newton struggle on the field for the New England Patriots, but the same first-round rookie quarterback who beat him out for a job in Mac Jones was teaching him plays in the playbook.

Former Patriot Rob Ninkovich had this to say about Jones actually being the one to teach Newton.

“From what I gained from sources inside the actual building, from everything I understand now, Mac was basically helping Cam learn the playbook,” said Ninkovich.

“Because Mac was having less mental errors and having a better understanding of the offense. We didn’t see Cam running any two-minute, we didn’t see him run any no-huddle. You have to run no-huddle. That’s vital.”

Jones will be making his first career NFL start on Sunday, Sept. 12 vs. the Miami Dolphins at home.

Mac Jones was teaching Cam Newton the New England Patriots playbook

While the Patriots playbook is understandably one of the most complicated in football, it is kind of hard to fathom Jones picking it up faster than Newton. Yes, we have to give Jones a ton of credit for being this cerebral this quickly, but Newton was in Foxborough for a year. Josh McDaniels is still the Patriots offensive coordinator. Therefore, the ultra-complicated system has not changed at all.

If you can’t run the two-minute offense or go no-huddle, then you probably can’t play quarterback.
