Ole Miss football will be without head coach Lane Kiffin in Week 1 after he tested positive for COVID-19 as a breakthrough case.

Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin is the first major college football head coach to miss a game with COVID-19 this season. He is out for the Rebels matchup with Louisville.

Kiffin announced his positive test on Twitter:

Is Lane Kiffin vaccinated?

Kiffin is fully vaccinated, making him a breakthrough case. He was sure to praise his program’s commitment to vaccination and the presence of no other active cases. Kiffin drew praise and national recognition for having his team 100 percent vaccinated.

His symptoms were mild, he even debated getting tested. It’s a good thing he did because he has the coronavirus and won’t run the risk of infecting others.

Ole Miss is a double-digit favorite over the Cardinals. The goal now is to make sure Kiffin’s absence doesn’t impact them too heavily.

There has been no interim head coach for Ole Miss named for Monday’s game just yet.
