Colin Cowherd’s takeaways from USC football’s season opener against San Jose State included scathing criticism of Clay Helton’s head coaching tenure.

Colin Cowherd is an LA guy. He’s been around the USC football program for a long time, so when he comments on the Trojans, you know he means it.

Clay Helton would probably rather not hear what Cowherd had to say during the season opener against San Jose State.

“Clay Helton is in his 6th year at USC. They are struggling at home against …San Jose State. Offense is a mess. That’s his side of the ball. OLine remains weakest unit — six years running. Rinse and repeat,” Cowherd tweeted.

Cowherd is right on all points. The Trojans did struggle as a 14-point favorite and only pulled away late thanks to a pick six.

The fact that they scored 30 points doesn’t do the woeful offensive performance justice.

For Helton, passing the eye test might be just as important as wins and losses. On Saturday, he didn’t live up to the expectations, which means his hot seat isn’t getting any cooler.
