Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly made it through the first two weeks of the season with two wins. But concern should be rising around the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame is 2-0. No Notre Dame fan should be content with that.

The Irish opened the season with a relatively easy slate. Florida State was coming off a 3-6 record. Toledo is Toledo. Brian Kelly’s squad struggled with both of them, winning the two games by a combined six points.

Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame looks vulnerable

The Florida State performance could be forgiven. They were on the road and in control before letting off and being punished for it. The Seminoles were fired up by their home crowd.

That wasn’t the case against Toledo, who showed up to Notre Dame Stadium as a 16-point underdog. They were in the lead with just over a minute to play, before Jack Coan threw the game-winning touchdown.

The Irish are lucky the Rockets were so out of sync late in the game. Otherwise, they might have suffered an embarrassing upset.

Coan ended up throwing two touchdowns in the game, racking up 239 yards, but he was replaced for a drive by Tyler Buchner, who hit 3-of-3 passes for 78 yards and a score. The Irish offense looked unsteady for much of the game. The stirrings of a quarterback controversy are beginning.

The last thing Kelly needs is QB uncertainty. The Irish have enough to figure out before facing tests against Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and USC in consecutive weeks. Even the Purdue game next week looms large, considering the recent performances.

If things don’t improve quickly, Notre Dame will get burned one of these times.
