The Detroit Lions *almost* pulled off an improbable comeback against the 49ers, and NFL Twitter was strapped in for the bumpy ride.

Week 1 is always weird as hell, but few things embodied that more than what happened in Detroit on Sunday.

After trailing 31-10 at halftime, Dan Campbell’s team chewed through that lead like it were a sack of kneecaps. Depending on who you talk to either the Lions came roaring back to life or the 49ers took the 11-point lead a little lighter than they should have, but regardless of the explanation what we saw was amazing.

The Lions scored twice in under a minute, converting two-point conversions both times and recovering an onside kick to keep the dream alive.

Detroit failed to recover a second onside kick, but the defense forced a Jimmy Garoppolo turnover to give the ball back to the offense with time to complete the improbable.

After posting only a touchdown and a field goal for an entire half of football, Detroit scored 16 points in roughly 43 seconds which was enough to not only excite fans at Ford Field but anyone who was watching the game.

At that point, given how outrageous the comeback was, everyone was watching.

The Lions failed to pull off the comeback, but not before weirdly making themselves endearing. Detroit has been doing that a lot lately, whether it’s the Tigers somehow posting a successful season despite being pegged as one of the worst teams in baseball or the Pistons landing Cade Cunningham in the NBA Draft.

Dan Campbell’s bizarre offseason went from creepy to cool, and the buy-in seems to have extended beyond just those of us watching at home and has authentically stuck with his players in the locker room.
