As expected, Colin Cowherd reacted to Clay Helton being out at the USC football head coach.

Colin Cowherd reacted accordingly to the news of Clay Helton being fired as the head coach of the USC football team.

The FS1 sports talkshow host and founder of The Volume recorded a two-minute video to best encapsulate his thoughts on Helton’s ‘long overdue’ termination. While he did say that Helton is a nice guy, his remarks about what USC had become under his leadership were more than damning. He said players do not get better going to USC, and no elite quarterbacks want to stay in-state.

Cornerbacks coach/defensive passing game coordinator Donte Williams takes over in the interim.

Colin Cowherd reacts to USC football firing Clay Helton as head coach

Even though the Washington Huskies were his first love in the college game, Cowherd has long been a proponent of USC football, dating back to his days at ESPN. For a minute there, Cowherd admitted that he thought Helton was going to be the coach that brought USC back in the wake of scandal. However, Helton seemed to get worse and worse each year after Sam Darnold left them.

While we are not even a month into the college season, no other more lucrative job will open up. Expect for USC to conduct a wide-sweeping search to finally get the right head coach. Candidates for the job include Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell, who worked for USC athletic director Mike Bohn previously, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell and Penn State head coach James Franklin.

Cowherd is not alone in his reaction to Helton’s termination, as it was a long time coming for him.
