Casey Thompson will get the start for the Texas football team at quarterback vs. Rice with Hudson Card getting benched after losing to Arkansas.

After seeing Hudson Card largely struggle in last week’s loss vs. Arkansas, Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian is rolling with Casey Thompson as his team’s starting quarterback vs. Rice.

While Card is seen as the more talented of the two quarterbacks with the higher upside, Thompson relieved him in last Saturday’s brutal loss in Fayetteville, playing significantly better than him down the stretch. Though Rice is not in Arkansas’ class, this is the right move for Sarkisian to make to ensure his first season in Austin does not go off the rails before it begins.

Card may be the quarterback of the future for Texas, but Thompson should get the start after Sarkisian outlined the mistakes he made vs. Arkansas.

Texas football: Steve Sarkisian is going with Casey Thompson over Hudson Card

Given that Sarkisian is a former quarterback himself, he cannot mess this up. While he earned his next opportunity to be a Power Five head coach, Texas could not have looked worse in their awful road loss to their former Southwest rival. Texas has to get tougher in the trenches in the years leading up to joining the SEC. Otherwise, Sam Pittman’s team and others will eat their lunch.

Though Texas may have two quarterbacks capable of starting for them, it really only means that they do not have one. Neither Card or Thompson did enough in Sarkisian’s eyes to separate themselves during fall camp. While both are expected to play on Saturday when the Owls come to town, it appears this quarterback battle has been re-opened after what happened in Fayetteville.

Look for Thompson to bring some much-needed stability to the quarterback position vs. Rice.
