While the Chiefs won a hard-fought game against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, they desperately needed their defensive team captain in the game. His absence appears to be short-lived.

The Chiefs narrowly escaped defeat in Week 1, beating the Cleveland Browns 33-29. While the Chiefs turned things around in the second half, the first half was abysmal as Baker Mayfield and the Browns seemed to carve them up in every aspect of the game.

It was clear they needed their defensive team captain Tyrann Mathieu. Well, good news for Chiefs fans: he’ll be back Week 2.

Tyrann Mathieu will return to game action in Week 2

Mathieu was placed on the COVID-19/Reserve list on Wednesday, September 1st and proceeded to miss the following couple weeks of practice. He was activated off of the list on the Saturday before the Week 1 game versus Cleveland, but coach Andy Reid decided to play it safe.

“That was completely me doing that,” said head coach Andy Reid per KSHB. “He (Mathieu) wanted to play. Both these guys wanted to play, but I just thought it was the right thing to do. I don’t want to take any steps back. Badger’s been out for two weeks. It was just best that we went this route.”

Mathieu appears to be full-go for the Chiefs’ Week 2 matchup against another AFC contender in the Baltimore Ravens. Having him back will be huge for the Chiefs defense.

Mathieu has been the subject of extension talks seemingly all of the offseason. Mathieu is entering the final year of his three-year deal he signed with the team. While the Chiefs are certainly tight against the cap, Sunday’s game proved that a Mathieu extension should be made a priority.

The Chiefs take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2’s Sunday Night Football matchup, and we can expect to see the ‘Honey Badger’ back in action quarterbacking the Chiefs defense.
