After he made a game-sealing interception in Week 1, Chiefs cornerback Mike Hughes drew some aggressive praise from Keyshawn Johnson.

In May the Kansas City Chiefs took a flier on a former first-round pick, sending a 2022 sixth-rounder to the Minnesota Vikings for cornerback Mike Hughes.

In Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, Hughes played 33 snaps and registered two tackles. But late in the fourth quarter, he sealed a victory for Kansas City with an interception of Baker Mayfield.

Hughes deflected praise away from himself after the game, citing the opportunity he simply took advantage of.

“We knew it was going to come down to getting a stop on defense,” Hughes explained. “I’ve got to give credit to the other 10 guys that did their job, flushed him out of the pocket, he made a bad decision and we just capitalized off it. So, it’s not all about me. I made a great catch, a great play. I’ve always got to give credit to those guys as well, ”

But someone else was not afraid to praise Mike Hughes

On his ESPN Radio morning show, when reviewing the Browns-Chiefs game, Keyshawn Johnson had unbelievably high praise for Hughes.

“Mark this down, he is a top five cornerback in the NFL, if he stays healthy.”

The Vikings took Hughes 30th overall out of Central Florida in the 2018 draft. But health has been the primary issue thus far in his career. A torn ACL ended his rookie season early, and a lingering neck issue from late in 2019 cost him all but four games last year. He played in just 24 of 48 games over three seasons in Minnesota, with two interceptions and 14 pass breakups.

Johnson qualified his praise by saying Hughes is a top-five cornerback in the league if he stays healthy. That’s obviously a huge “if,” but it shouldn’t take away from Hughes stepping up in a moment when it counted in his Chiefs’ debut.
