5 bold predictions for Cowboys against Chargers
2. Dak Prescott will attempt 50+ passes again
This may not seem like a bold prediction since Prescott threw 58 passes in Week 1 against the Buccaneers, but that’s clearly not the ideal run/pass mix for the Cowboys’ offense. The fact that he’ll be forced to throw again for a second consecutive week should be a serious concern for head coach Mike McCarthy and his offensive staff.
He won’t flirt with 60 pass attempts again, but he will hit the half-century mark by the time the fourth quarter expires. The Cowboys will need to score a lot of points in this game to keep up with the Chargers’ high-powered offensive attack. That reality will force Prescott to try to match Herbert throw for throw.
The key for Dallas will be to make sure Prescott receives good protection when he does drop back to pass. They cannot afford for him to take a bunch of hits so early in the regular season. The specter of going 0-2 should scare Dallas. The thought of losing Prescott to injury for a second consecutive year should be downright terrifying.
As such, look for Prescott to pad his passing attempt total with some screens and easy throws on the outside. Getting him outside of the pocket on sprint-outs would also be advisable in an effort to protect the franchise quarterback.
