A proposal gone wrong shocked the crowd at the NY Liberty-Washington Mystics game at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Jumbotron proposals may be a cliche in the sports world, but there’s a romantic appeal to professing love before fellows fans and favorite teams.

That is, of course, unless it’s met with a resounding “no.”

During the New York Liberty game versus the Washington Mystics, two Liberty fans were spotted on the Jumbotron mid-proposal. While the boyfriend got down on one knee in his Liberty jersey, his girlfriend quickly stormed away to audible audience gasps.

To salvage the mortifying moment, the Jumbotron quickly cut away from the botched proposal to a NY Liberty logo. The stunned boyfriend appeared to follow his girlfriend as he hoped for an explanation.

It’s not the first time New York basketball fans have seen a proposal gone wrong. According to one Knicks fan, it once happened at a Knicks game — and the entire crowd booed the girlfriend for saying no.

It’s no secret that the NBA has a strange history of proposals gone wrong: here’s another golden moment when a boyfriend holds out an engagement ring, only for it to be knocked away with a shove.

While teams apparently fake rejected proposals as a joke, the girlfriend leaving with her purse and quick cut away from the camera indicates this Liberty rejection is likely very real.
