TreVeyon Henderson breaks Ohio State rushing record for freshman held by Archie Griffin

Ohio State freshman running back TreVeyon Henderson is giving Buckeyes fans shades of Archie Griffin as he broke the legend’s freshman rushing record.

Anyone who has kept up with Ohio State football recruiting is well aware that running back TreVeyon Henderson came into his true freshman season as a star waiting to make his presence known. And after Saturday, there aren’t going to be many Buckeyes or college football fans who don’t know him.

In an admittedly shockingly close game against Tulsa on the heels of the Buckeyes losing to Oregon, head coach Ryan Day elected to ride Henderson as the workhorse for the offense and he delivered, then delivered more — then delivered more, just for good measure.

All told, when Henderson broke loose for a 52-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter, to reach 243 yards. The youngster had broke the single-game freshman rushing record of 239 yards set by Ohio State and college football royalty, Archie Griffin.

For a team that has struggled early in the season to find their identity and has experienced their share of defensive issues, Henderson could be Ohio State’s saving grace. He’s a dominant all-purpose back that can allow the Buckeyes to control the pace of the game while still giving them explosive-play ability and consistently moving the ball.

As Tulsa can attest to, Henderson is more than capable of doing that as he has a record-setting day against the Golden Hurricane to prove it.
