USC Trojans quarterback Kedon Slovis left the team’s win over Washington State with an injury and the staff updated fans on his status after the game.

In the first USC football game since Clay Helton was dismissed as head coach, the Trojans looked a bit out-of-sorts against Washington State. Only furthering that, however, was star quarterback Kedon Slovis taking a big sack that seemed to injure his neck and ultimately took him out of the game.

Lucky for the Trojans, true freshman Jaxson Dart came into the game and delivered a masterful performance from a young player with no experience at the college level, setting a USC record for passing yards in a debut and leading his team to an emphatic win over Wazzu.

However good Dart was, though, the Kedon Slovis injury was still a concern for many fans.

After the win over the Cougars, interim head coach Donte Williams said that Slovis will practice this week ahead of the Oregon State game but was noncommittal about anything beyond that:

That does leave Slovis’ status somewhat uncertain for their Week 4 game against another Pac-12 opponent, Oregon State. Yet, the fact that he will practice is a positive for the Trojans moving forward.

The Kedon Slovis injury should be approached with caution by the USC football staff

For as well as Dart played in relief, this is Kedon Slovis’ team and, if USC is going to recapture some fire and rebound after losing to Stanford and firing Helton, they want him under center. But that also doesn’t mean rushing him back onto the field.

Because of the performance Dart had in his first college football action if Williams and the Trojans coaching staff isn’t confident that Slovis is 100 percent, they know the offense will be in fine hands. Furthermore, they are playing a Beavers team that, frankly, can’t totally match up with them.

We’ll see how the Kedon Slovis injury progresses as he practices this week but it’s apparent that USC should take a cautious approach with the veteran quarterback in the best interest of the long-term outlook for the 2021 season.
