Ex-Red Sox worried Eduardo Rodriguez is tipping pitches

Former Boston Red Sox player Lou Merloni was concerned that starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was tipping his pitches on Tuesday night against the New York Mets.

The Boston Red Sox held the top AL Wild Card spot entering Tuesday night, as they look to hold back the rival Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. The team needs some cushioning in the standings, which is why it was pivotal for the team to pick up wins against the New York Mets in their two-game series. With that, they would need pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to throw a lights-out game.

Rodriguez threw for 4.1 innings on Tuesday night, where he recorded five strikeouts and issued three walks while surrendering two earned runs on five hits. Former Red Sox infielder Lou Merloni took to Twitter to express his concern that Rodriguez was tipping his pitches, specifically his changeup.

That is certainly a great pickup by Merloni. And it should be concerning for Red Sox fans as the team enters the final stretch of the regular-season to hopefully clinch a postseason for the first time since 2018.

Rodgriguez gave up both earned runs in the top of the fourth inning. The left-hander walked Francisco Lindor, allowed a single to Javier Baez and issued a walk to Pete Alonso with zero outs on the board. With the bases loaded and no outs, Rodriguez walked J.D. Davis to bring Lindor home and immediatley surrendered an RBI single to Michael Conforto to give the Mets the 2-0 lead.

Fortunately for Rodriguez, he was bailed out by his team in the bottom of the inning, thanks to two-run double by catcher Christian Vazquez.

If Rodriguez is indeed tipping his pitches, that is welcome news to whoever faces him at the tail end of this season.
