Kirk Herbstreit shares his seven best teams after how they played last Saturday in Week 3.

While teams like Alabama and Georgia loom large atop the AP Top 25 poll, these seven squads really impressed ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit by how they played last week.

What all seven of these teams listed by Herbstreit on Twitter have in common is that they either played up and beat a team of perceived higher quality or held their own in a victorious manner on a major national stage. While only two of these seven teams find themselves firmly inside of the top 10 of the AP Top 25 poll this week, Herbstreit gives credit where credit is due after last Saturday.

Here are the seven teams that Herbstreit believes gave us the best performances from Week 3.

His top three teams were Fresno State, Penn State and Michigan State. The Bulldogs upset No. 13 UCLA in the Rose Bowl. Penn State held on to beat No. 22 Auburn in their White Out of Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions are now the No. 6 team in the country. Michigan State now finds itself ranked No. 20 in the nation after shellacking the former No. 24 Miami Hurricanes in South Florida.

Rounding out his top seven were the Western Michigan Broncos, Cincinnati Bearcats, West Virginia Mountaineers and San Diego State Aztecs.

Western Michigan and San Diego State played up and beat Group of Five teams in Pittsburgh and Utah, respectively. Cincinnati overcame a slow start to put away Indiana. West Virginia took care of business to upset the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Congratulations to these seven programs for getting early signature wins on the young season.
