Luke Doty will make his first start of the year for the South Carolina football team on Saturday.

While his head coach Shane Beamer became a meme after last Saturday night’s road loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, Luke Doty did enough vs. the Hungry Dawgs defense to be named the starting quarterback for the South Carolina football team in Week 4.

Doty initially hurt his foot in practice in the weeks leading up to the regular season. Graduate assistant Zeb Noland filled in for Doty for the first few weeks of the season. However, Noland got his hand stepped on in the blowout loss to Georgia and Doty came in to relieve him. Though South Carolina lost the game 40-13, Doty did connect on a few nice throws down the field vs. Georgia.

South Carolina will host the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night in Week 4.

South Carolina football: Luke Doty named starting quarterback vs. Kentucky

In the early part of the year, Kentucky looks like the third best team in the SEC East. Mark Stoops’ team has already beaten Missouri. With a win over South Carolina, the Wildcats might have a shot to stun Florida in a few weeks. As for the Gamecocks, they may be rebuilding, but they look like the fifth best team in the East, as they have been more impressive than Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

If Doty can sling it like he did vs. Georgia, South Carolina could be a sneaky-good team this season.
