Yankees: 3 players Brian Cashman would like to cut, but can’t

2. Aaron Hicks, OF
After the Yankees made a trade with the Minnesota Twins to acquire Aaron Hicks in 2016, it seemed like they found their center fielder for the foreseeable future. His defense in the outfield and his solid numbers at the plate inspired the Yankees to give him a seven-year, $70 million contract extension ahead of the 2019 season.
That signing has not gone well, as Hicks was consistently bitten by the injury bug. In 2019, Hicks had to undergo Tommy John surgery. Then back in May, Hicks suffered a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, knocking him out for the remainder of the 2021 season.
Even before the left wrist surgery, Hicks was struggling at the plate this year. The outfielder had slashed .194/.294/.333 while recording four home runs, 14 RBI and 21 hits in 32 games.
Hicks is under contract for the next four seasons where he is set to make over or around $10 million per year. The outfielder also has a club option worth $12.5 million in 2026. Given that the Yankees have an ideal outfield combination at their disposal next year in Aaron Judge, Joey Gallo and Giancarlo Stanton, there is an opening for Cashman to move on. However, that is a lot of money owed to Hicks, so he will probably stay with the team.
