The St. Louis Cardinals removed Jack Flaherty in his first start back after just a third of an inning. Turns out he was on a pitch count.

Flaherty was taken out after giving up two runs and recording only a single out. Patrick Wisdom of the Cubs took him deep.

The Cardinals remain in prime position to win the game, and their 14th straight, sweeping the doubleheader. Nonetheless, seeing Flaherty get replaced by Dakota Hudson in the first inning is a concern for Cards fans.

The Cardinals’ entered the game with a magic number of five. They can lower it even further with a win against Chicago on Friday night.

Jack Flaherty injury: Should Cardinals be concerned about first start back?

Until Flaherty is back at full strength and pitching like the ace of this pitching staff, they should absolutely be worried. This Cardinals team will only go as far as their staff takes them.

Even if Adam Wainwright can get the Cardinals past a Wild Card game scenario, the pitching depth will be tested in the NLDS, with Flaherty likely being called upon at some point if he’s remotely healthy.

Don’t get it twisted — Flaherty’s limited start on Friday night was a setback, even if the Cardinals won’t admit it.
