The Shamrock Series game between No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 18 Wisconsin will take place at Soldier Field. The two top-20 teams haven’t faced off since 1964 when the Irish come out with a big 31-7 win.
Despite being 3-0, Notre Dame is going into their contest with Wisconsin as underdogs. Wisconsin is coming off of a bye week and riding momentum from a 34-7 domination over Eastern Michigan. The Irish put up a 27-13 effort over Purdue last week, but had a close game with Toledo (32-29) and had to make it through overtime to inch past Florida State (41-38) in weeks prior.
The ultimate barrier that stands between Notre Dame and a 4-0 start is the impressive Wisconsin defense. The Badgers defense is ranked No. 2 in the nation and has been merciless against the running game. They’ve allowed only 66 rushing yards by opponents all season. For a Notre Dame offense that has been less than spectacular on the ground, it’s going to be a long game.
Jack Coan, the former Badgers quarterback, is going to have to show up with a few big plays against his old team to keep his offense alive. Luckily, that may be the best advantage Notre Dame has. Coan already has nine passing touchdowns this season and has thrown for 906 yards. He has to keep up that level of production even in the face of a monstrous Wisconsin defense if the Irish have any hope of pulling off a win in the Windy City.
