On College GameDay, Kirk Herbstreit suggested that LSU football still has talent, but they don’t look like they care about playing for Ed Orgeron.

LSU is just a couple of seasons removed from one of the most impressive national title runs in college football history.

The trouble for head coach Ed Orgeron is that the 2019 campaign was then, this is now.

The 2021 Tigers opened the season with a loss to UCLA and there are doubts it’s going to get much better for them in SEC play.

Take Kirk Herbstreit’s latest dig at LSU on College GameDay while picking between the Tigers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

“LSU has the better talent, but do they care about playing football anymore?” Herbstreit said when making a pick between the LSU and Mississippi State game.

That’s a devastating question to ask of Orgeron and his team. But it’s also valid.

The Tigers may have talent, but they’ve experienced serious brain drain on the coaching staff. Passing game coordinator Joe Brady and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, the architects of the 2019 dominance, are both gone. Without them in 2020, LSU limped to a 5-5 record.

In 2021, LSU’s most impressive victory of the campaign so far is a 34-7 win over FCS McNeese State.

Mike Leach’s Mississippi State made a fool of the Tiger defense in their season-opening win last year. Orgeron and company will need to prove Herbstreit wrong by keeping their head in the game this time around.
