The St. Louis Cardinals have won yet another game on Sunday, but this one will go down as their weirdest of the season.

Earlier this month, the expectation was that there would be a crowded mad dash for the final Wild Card spot in the National League. That all changed after the St. Louis Cardinals decided, as a group, that they will never lose a game ever again. Their winning streak has now extended to 16-games, and Sunday’s win was perhaps the weirdest.

In the top of the ninth inning against the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals broke a 2-2 tie after Andrew Knizner scored on a wild pitch by Codi Heuer and a groundout by Tyler O’Neill allowed Lars Nootbaar to score, giving St. Louis a 4-2 lead.

But things got weird in the bottom of the ninth.

Infield fly rule

The game seemingly ended after Cubs outfielder Rafael Ortega was tagged out by second baseman Tommy Edman after he overran the bag when a pop-up by Frank Schwindel was dropped by Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. The umpires called it an infield fly, which completely negated the tag-out to Ortega, despite the rule saying that baserunners can advance at their own risk. Ortega was originally standing on first base prior to Schwindel’s pop-up.

Manager Mike Shildt was ejected from the game after arguing the decision of the umpires to call time. The call was not costly, as the Cardinals earned the win after Ian Happ struck out swinging.

Longest winning streak by NL team in 70 years

With this victory in the books, the Cardinals have now won 16-consecutive games. St. Louis is now the first National League team to win 16-straight games since the New York Giants did so all the way back in 1951!

The Cardinals will look to make it 17 in a row on Tuesday when they play the rival Milwaukee Brewers.
