San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is actually making more in the 2021 season than Green Bay Packers signal caller Aaron Rodgers.

The San Francisco 49ers looked to continue their undefeated start to the 2021 campaign, but the only way to do so was to keep pace with the Green Bay Packers offense, led by quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. The majority of the first half was a struggle for the 49ers, but they heated up in the final minutes before halftime, which culminated in a rushing touchdown by Trey Lance to cut their deficit to 17-7.

With Rodgers shining in the first half, the official Twitter account of Spotrac let the world know that San Francisco’s starting signal caller is getting paid more in 2021 than the reigning MVP.

After acquiring him in a trade with the New England Patriots in 2017, the 49ers signed Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million contract at the end of that season. Despite dealing with a variety of injuries in his time with the 49ers, he did lead the team to an NFC championship and a trip to Super Bowl 54 in 2019. However, the team is looking towards the future.

This past offseason, the 49ers negotiated a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire the third-overall pick in the NFL Draft, which was used on Lance. There is an obvious succession plan in place in San Francisco, despite the fact that Garoppolo has one more year remaining on his deal. However, the 49ers can opt to release or trade him in 2022, since he carries a dead cap hit of just $1.4 million, per Spotrac.

Garoppolo may not be the only quarterback on the move next offseason. There were plenty of reports this year of the contentious relationship between Rodgers and the Packers. The two sides did ultimately reconcile, but after the Packers agreed to trade Rodger to another team after this season if he so chooses.

Whatever happens in the future, let the record show that Garoppolo makes more than Rodgers this season.
