After initially not responding to a media request for comment on a controversial infield fly ruling in Cardinals-Cubs, the umpires are providing an explanation.

It’s about time.

In the ninth inning of what would end up being the St. Louis Cardinals’ 16th straight victory, Mike Shildt’s group cut things a little close due to a bizarre infield fly ruling.

The video above explains things fairly well, but essentially the infield fly rule was in effect, meaning the batter was out. There was no force out on the play at second or third base, however, so a second out was not determined.

Rafael Ortega did round second base and was tagged by Paul Goldschmidt. This should’ve resulted in the final out of the game, but the second-base umpire claimed he called time, rendering the tag useless.

Baseball is incredibly confusing, folks.

Cardinals: Mike Schmidt was irate at infield fly decision

Shildt didn’t quite understand why the umpires reversed their decision of an out at second base, and the second-base ump calling time is…a lackluster call to say the least. Yet, it’s what happened, even if a human flaw.

The Cards’ skipper was ejected for arguing with the umpires, as he got his money’s worth. Thankfully, the Cardinals would win the game, recording the final out shortly thereafter. Losing such a monumental win streak on a confounding play such as the one above would be deflating heading into the postseason.
