Who is Bronxie?

The New York Yankees got a pet turtle, and what has occurred since then is nothing short of what makes baseball incredible.

The Yankees need a pet for the clubhouse — that’s what was holding them back, evidently. New York was out of a Wild Card spot just over a week ago, falling to third in those rankings behind the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Since then, the Yankees have (as of this writing) gone on a six-game win streak. What’s the difference?

It’s Bronxie, of course. The team’s pet turtle has been a sparkplug in the clubhouse, despite having very little to do with the on-field product.

Yankees: Whose idea was Bronxie the turtle?

Bronxie was initially bought by Nestor Cortes, who solved the Yankees need for a clubhouse pet. The turtle was named after the Bronx, which just so happens to be where the Yankees play their home games.

Is this the first clubhouse pet turtle? One would have to assume so.

Is it exceptionally awesome? Yes, very much so.

Whether or no the Yankees make the playoffs isn’t relevant to this story, but if they do happen to win the World Series, Bronxie deserves a ring of his own.
