The St. Louis Cardinals have not lost a game since Sep. 10. And there’s a very possible chance that they may not take another L before the postseason starts. Their 16-game winning streak is the longest for any team this season.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ last loss came against the Reds early in September but since then have put together the best string of games in franchise history, winning 16 straight games. It’s also the longest such streak of any team this season. Their hot play couldn’t have come at a more opportune time: before this win streak, they had only a 5% chance of getting into the playoffs, according to FanGraphs.

As of today, they have separated themselves from the pack for the last NL Wild Card spot.

While they can’t catch the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead, they can easily make them sweat if they sweep them in their last trio of games. St. Louis currently holds the 9-7 series lead over Milwaukee but the Brewers are seven games ahead in the standing. Starting tonight, the Cardinals will host the Brewers for their last stretch of games for the season.

Cardinals win streak is story of baseball

Last week, the Brewers fell victim to the streak when they lost a four-game series in Milwaukee; albeit, if there was a perfect team to put an end to this historic string of games, it would be this conference rival, who are playing with nothing to lose.

If the Cardinals are able to escape the Brewers unscathed, they’ll conclude their regular season against the bottom-feeding Chicago Cubs.

While St. Louis has overtaken the Phillies for the last Wild Card spot, they must continue winning to secure the spot in the case the Phillies somehow snatch the NL East from the Atlanta Braves. If all three teams end with 87-75 records, the Phillies would take the NL East crown while the Braves have the tie-breaker over the Cardinals for the Wild Card spot.

The magic number for the Cardinals is one — if they can grab a win in any of their last six games, they’re a lock for the playoffs.
