The ACC is no longer being propped up by Clemson after the Tigers lost their second game of the month.

College football was very close to being spun on its head this past weekend. Conference play started around the country, and some teams made it very clear they weren’t ready for primetime. Oklahoma is falling down the Top 25 rankings despite still being undefeated (but pure unadulterated luck). Arkansas showed they are a team in the SEC that shouldn’t be overlooked with a major win over Texas A&M.

The biggest surprises were in the ACC. Clemson lost again. The last time Clemson’s second loss came before the bowl game (and usually the College Football Playoff) was back during the 2014 season. North Carolina went from a preseason Top 10 team to now unranked.

The big storyline of this season is a lack of great quarterbacks. Some are calling for Spencer Rattler to be benched in Oklahoma. Sam Howell is not the same guy who looked like a force for the Tar Heels. D.J. Uiagalelei needs at least a year to figure out how to run a championship offense. D’Eriq King is just not the great talent people thought he could be when he left Houston for Miami. Is anyone really that good? It just seems like we’re destined for an Alabama Georgia National Championship Game, and everyone else is just a traffic cone.

College football power rankings: SEC is beyond dominant, ACC is beyond disappointing

5. ACC

Last week, the ACC jumped back into the top three in conferences after the rest of the conferences fell out of favor, but there’s no denying it this season. The ACC is going to be left out of the College Football Playoff. Clemson’s loss to N.C. State and North Carolina’s loss to Georgia Tech in an embarrassing fashion leaves the conference scrambling. Boston College and Wake Forest are the conference’s only hope as the two undefeated teams left and they face off in the last game of the season. Florida State might be one of the worst teams in the country. Everything is going wrong for the ACC right now, and if things get worse next week there could be zero teams in the Top 25.

4. Big 12

Is the West Virginia defense good or is Oklahoma just not that good? The Sooners have never lost to WVU since they joined the Big 12, but they needed a field goal as time expired to keep that streak alive on Saturday. They didn’t look very good in the process and Sooners fans were calling for Spencer Rattler’s backup. Iowa State fell out of the rankings after losing to Baylor this weekend who joined the top 25. Oklahoma State is an interesting team that is still undefeated after beating then-No. 25 Kansas State. Texas put up a 70 burger on a previously undefeated Texas Tech. TCU and Kansas both lost their non-conference matchups. There is a lot of parity in the Big 12, but that will end up hurting the conference’s ranking as a whole.
