The Atlanta Braves had to choose between Charlie Morton and Max Fried to start the NLDS, and they’re going with experience.

This is no knock on Fried, who has been brilliant the second half of the season. He will form a dominant tandem with Charlie Morton, who has been tabbed as the Braves’ Game 1 starter against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Milwaukee, surely, will counter with Corbin Burnes, who could very well win the NL Cy Young.

Ian Anderson is likely to get Game 3. Snitker said Morton will pitch a couple of innings in the season finale on Sunday as to not mess with his normal reps, but don’t expect the Braves to put him in harms’ way.

Braves: Why start Charlie Morton for Game 1?

Morton’s playoff experience demands respect from the outset, and it’s part of the reason the Braves signed him in the first place. In 13 playoff appearance, Morton has a 3.38 ERA.

Getting off to a solid Game 1 start against a pitcher of Burnes’ caliber is key for a Braves team hoping to redeem a tough NLCS loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Atlanta held a 3-1 lead in that series.

Morton had a 3.39 ERA this season, paired with over 200 strikeouts for the third straight year.
