After suffering a brutal knee injury, David Montgomery updated Bears fans on Twitter with what appears to be better news than expected.

Chicago Bears fans watched Justin Fields collect his first win as an NFL starter with bated breath. While the win was a huge relief, the loss of David Montgomery put a damper on the celebration especially considering how serious the injury seemed at the time.

Montgomery needed to be helped off the field after taking an awkward hit, one that had him writhing in pain the moment he hit the grass. As Montgomery ripped his helmet off in agony, players dropped to one knee with concern, painting a picture for fans that seemed extremely grim.

It seems that things might not have been as bad as they appeared, though.

After seeing him leave the game and nervously speculate about what the potential damage could be, Montgomery seemingly calmed the waters. Following the game he sent out a cryptic tweet that seems to imply that things aren’t nearly as bad as they seemed.

Bears running backs: Bears depth chart after David Montgomery injury

If Montgomery misses time, the Bears running back room is going to be very quiet. Right now Chicago only has two healthy running backs active.

RB1: David Montgomery (Left Week 4 with knee injury, status TBD)
RB2: Damien Williams
RB3: Khalil Herbert

Tarik Cohen is still recovering from an injury he suffered last season, so he’s not an option at the moment for the Bears. There are free agent options out there, but it’s slim pickings if a third running back is needed for Week 5.

Just because Montgomery tweeted an update doesn’t mean he’s automatically going to start next week, but it’s an incredibly encouraging sign given how bad things initially looked.
