Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez has left Game 162 against the Washington Nationals with a sprained ankle.

Martinez reportedly sprained his ankle after tripping over second base. It’s an unfortunate ailment, and an entirely unpredictable one.

The 34-year-old was dealt a significant blow, especially given the Red Sox may have two win-or-go-home games coming up on Monday and Tuesday should they lose against the Nationals.

Weirdly, it was not playing the outfield that forced Martinez to leave the game, but a base-running blunder instead.

Martinez was replaced in the lineup by Jose Iglesias.

What happens if the Red Sox lose tonight?

Should the Red Sox lose to the Nationals on Sunday, they’ll be facing at least a one-game playoff with the Blue Jays to see who makes the AL Wild Card game. If the Yankees and Red Sox lose, then there will be a three-team playoff to determine the two teams in said Wild Card game.

Baseball fans without a horse in this race are surely rooting for chaos. The Blue Jays have done their part, defeating the Baltimore Orioles by a lopsided scoreline.
