Alabama Crimson Tide backup running back Jase McClellan is out for the season with a knee injury.

After coming off their most dominant win of the season, No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide received the bad news that backup running back Jase McClellan is done for the year with a knee injury. Head coach Nick Saban shared the news with the media on Monday.

McClellan was the backup to starter Brian Robinson Jr. Through five games, he was second on the team with 40 carries and 191 rushing yards and one touchdown. He added another three touchdowns through the air on 97 receiving yards. He also added a touchdown after returning a blocked kick.

Running back depth has typically not been an issue for Saban’s teams in Tuscaloosa but with McClellan, it’s time for the next man up to seize his opportunity.

Alabama depth chart: Who replaces Jase McClellan?

There isn’t a single person who will replace McClellan’s production, but a number of guys who will receive more opportunity. That starts with starter Brian Robinson Jr. who may have to take on a bigger role than he already enjoys.

The Tuscaloosa native who returned for a fifth year is finally getting his opportunity to lead a backfield. On Saturday, against Ole Miss, Robinson Jr. had 36 carries for 171 yards and four touchdowns in a career day. With McClellan down, Robinson Jr. will continue to shoulder the majority of the load.

Stepping in to spare Robinson Jr. will be sophomores Roydell Williams and Trey Sanders.

Williams has 24 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Sanders, who suffered season-ending injuries in 2019 and 2020, has 20 carries for 83 yards and one touchdown on the year.

Both young backs will have the opportunity to earn more carries throughout the rest of the season.

Their increased role will start Saturday when Alabama takes on Texas A&M.
