New York Yankees free agents entering 2021 offseason

The New York Yankees will face some tough choices as they’re heading into free agency following their loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Following their 6-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox in the 2021 American League Wild Card game, the New York Yankees must now face free agency. There are three Yankees players who will be entering free agency and they had varying impacts on New York this year.

Corey Kluber hasn’t been with the New York Yankees for very long as he joined the club at the beginning of this season. The 35-year-old pitcher wasn’t stellar for the Yankees, but he was solid in a limited capacity, compiling a 5-3 record and a 3.83 ERA while striking out 82 batters in 80 innings.

Kluber was acquired in free agency and paid $11 million to play for the Yankees. Now he’s entering into free agency once more.

New York Yankees: 2021 free agents

Anthony Rizzo, like Kluber, hasn’t been with New York for very long. Rizzo spent most of his career with the Chicago Cubs but a trade landed him with the Yankees. He only played 49 regular season games with the Yankees and managed to hit with a .249 batting average and knock eight home runs.

In total, Rizzo was paid $16.5 million this season. But, even though he hasn’t bee with the Yankees for an extensive period of time he did have a positive impact in the AL Wild Card game as he hit one of New York’s two home runs in the game. That’s something, right?

Andrew Heaney was also acquired in a trade. His ERA with the Yankees sits at 7.32 and he only struck out 37 batters in 35.2 innings pitched. When compared to the other guys on this list, Heaney isn’t paid all that much. The 30-year-old pitcher made $6.75 million this year.

The Yankees brought him in and, during his brief time with New York, Heaney very clearly struggled. While Kluber and Rizzo had some moments to brag about, Heaney had a rough experience.

Brett Gardner has a club option, as well as Joely Rodriguez. Darren O’Day has a mutual option, while Aaron Boone’s contract is also up (though he is not a player).
