UNC head coach Mack Brown hasn’t shown much grace in losing this season, turning the blame on the media for ranking the Tar Heels in the Top 10.

The 2021 season has not been kind to North Carolina or head coach Mack Brown. He sounds like it, displaying the type of bitterness that can only come from being an utter disappointment.

After UNC lost to Florida State, 35-25, Brown had to answer questions on failing to live up to expectations.

Mack Brown wants to criticize the media for UNC’s expectations

“My expectation is to win every game, so three times we’ve met it and three times we haven’t,” Brown said, per Lauren Brownlow of WRAL. “The national media expectation, the expectation for us to be a Top 10 team, were wrong. So I guess we should all be critical of the media for picking us that high.”

Here’s the thing: People have been critical of the media for getting it so wrong on the Tar Heels. That’s not the issue.

People aren’t mad at UNC for not being a Top 10 team. People are critical because they’re 3-3. The team could have started the season unranked and still the reaction to a .500 record would not be positive.

The bigger question is why a UNC team that went 8-4 last season and returned a Heisman candidate at quarterback looks like they have regressed so completely.

Brown can blame the media for the disappointment, but he’s just deflecting.
