After upsetting Alabama, the Texas A&M football team may have a future quarterback controversy on its hands between Zach Calzada and the injured former starter Haynes King.

Haynes King had won the Texas A&M starting job out of fall camp, but an early-season injury led to Zach Calzada making the most of his opportunity.

While Calzada had not been running away with it per se, he did lead the Aggies to an upset bid at home over then-No. 1 Alabama. Though he got banged up in the division game vs. the Crimson Tide, he should be good to go the rest of the way for the Aggies. As for King, it is unlikely he plays a snap for the rest of the season, as he works his way back from a broken leg.

What are the chances Calzada has taken the Texas A&M starting quarterback gig away from King permanently after beating Alabama in College Station?

Texas A&M football: Has Haynes King lost his starting job to Zach Calzada?

On the year, Calzada is completing 56.6 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and five interceptions. While those numbers are nothing to write home about, he is coming off easily his best game in Texas A&M Aggies uniform vs. Alabama. Calzada completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 285 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He is 2-2 in four starts this year.

Looking at Texas A&M’s remaining regular-season games, they are all winnable. At Ole Miss on Nov. 13 will be tough, but there are no certain losses remaining for the Aggies until maybe bowl season. So if Texas A&M goes 8-4 or better the rest of the way and Calzada gets better with every rep, King may end up losing his job.

Expect another heated quarterback competition next spring and summer between the two, but the experience Calzada gained this year with King out, could be the difference.
