30 highest-paid NFL players on their current contracts
13. Jimmy Garoppolo
The 49ers pried Garoppolo away from New England with the belief that he could quarterback them to a championship. It’s clear the regime in San Francisco has lost faith in Garoppolo after spending a high pick on Trey Lance in the most recent NFL draft.
Garoppolo is still hanging on as the starter by the Bay, but he’s clearly overpaid with his AAV of $27.5 million. The fact that he only has one year remaining after this season on his current contract makes him a prime trade candidate come next offseason.
Many of the criticisms levied at Carr also apply to Garoppolo. He’s pretty competent when he’s given a clean pocket and allowed to get the ball out on time. When plays break down Garoppolo lacks the skills to make something good happen against the odds.
His inability to be anything more than a system quarterback has his days in San Francisco numbered. He should enjoy cashing big checks now because his next contract won’t be nearly as lucrative.
