College football overtime rules have changed but some games are going to challenge for the most overtimes in history.

Overtime games can be one of the most exciting aspects of college football. With the alternating possessions, the pressure and stakes are ramped up to a million.

Of course, the college football overtime rules have changed for the 2021 season with teams alternating two-point conversion attempts. That’s likely to lead to a ton of games with many, many overtimes.

But what’s the record for the most overtimes in a single game in college football history? Don’t worry, we have you covered.

What’s the record for most overtimes in college football?

Prior to Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, there were five games in which there were seven overtimes.

In Week 8 of the 2021 season, though, the slog between Illinois and Penn State not only became the sixth game to reach seven overtimes, but it set the record itself by going into the ninth overtime where Illinois picked up the win, 20-18.

This game wasn’t as exciting as, say, the most recent seven-overtime game with Texas A&M and LSU in 2018 as the Illini and Nittany Lions were struggling to convert two-point conversion attempts under the new rules, thus leading to the long, long affair.

With the new rules, you have to wonder if we’ll see a new record set sometime soon.
