Penn State’s uniforms for the game against Illinois feature a whole bunch of throwback elements, including numbers on the helmets.

It could be argued that Penn State wears throwback uniforms every week with their classic look.

This week they’re wearing something with the throwback element turned up to 11.

The Nittany Lions are wearing their “Generations of Greatness” uniforms against Illinois.

Throwbacks feature Penn State numbers on helmets

The most immediately noticeable part of the uniforms are the lids. Instead of the usual white helmet with a simple stripe, these ones have the numbers on the side.

That’s not the only callback. Per Uniswag.com, the gray facemask is from 1970-72, the block numbers are from the 50s and 60s,  the white stripes on the sleeves are from multiple uniform editions through the years, the blue stripe down the side of the pants is from 1952-68 and the striped socks are from the 70s.

Basically, the whole look is made up of a collection of elements from various eras in Nittany Lion history.

It’s a cool way to honor the past while keeping the uniforms distinctly recognizable as Penn State.
