After Mike Tomlin shot down rumors about the USC coaching job, Joel Klatt introduced a new NFL name into the picture for the Trojans.

The search for a new USC head coach has been going strong for over a month and still, fresh names are being added to the mix seemingly every day.

Mike Tomlin already took himself out of the running, but could the Trojans pursue a different NFL name?

Joel Klatt of FOX suggested they could during an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

USC coaching rumor: Matt Rhule could be in the mix

“I’ve been told that Matt Rhule is not all the way in on the NFL moving forward and that he could potentially come back down to a number of these jobs,” Klatt told Cowherd.

Rhule is in his second year as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. The 2021 season started like a dream as the Panthers won three games in a row, but they’ve now lost four straight, and Rhule’s job security is in question.

The timeline for going after Rhule would be tricky. Carolina would need to fire him before the season ends to make it really viable. Otherwise, the Trojans would have to wait until mid-January when the NFL regular season ends to identify their pick. That’s a long way to wait.

Despite that, Rhule would be a strong hire for Mike Bohn. He took Temple to back-to-back 10-win seasons before dragging Baylor from a 1-11 record to 11-3 and a Sugar Bowl appearance in Year 3.
