Chicago’s starting rotation was a huge question mark entering this campaign. In the offseason, the team declined veteran Jon Lester’s club option and shockingly traded NL Cy Young runner-up in 2020, Yu Darvish, to the San Diego Padres.

Hoyer needs to look at arms for his starting rotation. Zack Greinke is a potential target for the Cubs, but only if he wants to continue his playing career.

The right-hander played a huge role in the Astros making it to the World Series in 2019 when they struck a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, as he accumulated a 8-1 win-loss record and 3.02 ERA in 10 regular-season starts.

This year, Greinke pitched in 30 regular-season games before being placed on the injured list with neck soreness towards the end of the campaign. As the Astros progressed in the postseason, Greinke only made three appearances, with his first two only lasting a total of 2.1 innings. But in Game 4, Greinke struck out three batters and surrendered four hits in four scoreless innings. Oh, and he was able to get a single in two plate appearances.

Overall, Greinke owns a 3.89 ERA, a 1.141 WHIP and a 22-10 win-loss record in his three years in Houston (52 games).

If the Cubs want to bring in a veteran arm to add to their starting rotation, Greinke would be a solid get at the right price. Of course, that is if the 38-year-old wants to continue playing.
