Atlanta Braves fans got so loud when Greg Maddux threw out the first pitch ahead of Game 5.

When Greg Maddux threw out the first pitch ahead of Game 5 of the 2021 World Series, Atlanta Braves fans at Truist Park were completely beside themselves.

The Baseball Hall of Fame spent 11 seasons in Atlanta uniform from 1992 to 1993. He won three Cy Young awards in row upon arrival in Atlanta by way of the Chicago Cubs in his high-profile free agency. Maddux played an instrumental role in the Team of the ’90s era of Braves baseball. With fellow Hall of Famers Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, they were the greatest rotation of all time.

The best part of Maddux throwing out the first pitch ahead of Game 5 was that his favorite catcher Eddie Perez was there to complete the battery.

While Glavine and Smoltz maintained close ties to the organization after their playing days were over, Maddux did not echo their sentiment after he left in 2004 MLB free agency. Then again, he came up in the Cubs farm system, while Glavine and Smoltz made their big-league debuts in Atlanta. Regardless, Maddux is one of the most beloved pitchers not just in Atlanta, but anywhere.

For Maddux to not only be in Atlanta in person for what could be the biggest night this city has seen since 1995, it is so special. Smoltz is in the FOX booth calling the game with Joe Buck. Glavine calls games on Bally every now and then and still lives in the Atlanta area. For them to all be at this game with so much at stake, it would only make what could happen on Halloween even sweeter.
