The Nebraska Cornhuskers made a huge announcement Monday surrounding the future of Huskers head coach Scott Frost.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers will not be firing Scott Frost. At least, not this season.

While Frost and the Huskers have been underachieving this season and they’ve struggled through much of his tenure in Lincoln, apparently there is enough trust in his coaching abilities for Nebraska to not fire him right now.

Nebraska announced on Monday they agreed to a restructured contract with Frost who will be the Nebraska football coach for at least 2022.

Scott Frost will return to Nebraska in 2022

Frost has a .357 win percentage at Nebraska, which is the worst of any Huskers coach since 1961. He’s got the team at 3-7 this year but has outscored opponents on the season as they have been victims of plenty of bad luck. Nebraska hasn’t found a way to win close games, which can be viewed as Frost being close to getting the team over the hump. Or, this is as good as it gets for Frost and Nebraska under his watch.

The Huskers are apparently currently content with the way Frost is leading the program and are willing to give him some more time to try and figure things out. Who knows exactly how well that will pay off? But it won’t pay Frost as much as it would have without restructuring his deal. This is similar to what Michigan and Jim Harbaugh did the last offseason. Instead of firing him and completely starting over, they reduced  Harbaugh’s financial compensation and reset expectations.

This new, restructured contract business is interesting. Frost had an absolutely absurd buyout of nearly $20 million in his previous contract. Depending on the terms of this important deal that Frost has apparently agreed to, maybe it’ll make firing him that much easier for Nebraska should the Huskers struggle again next season.

Frost proved he could win with the UCF Knights, maybe there’s still time for him to prove that he can win with his alma mater.
