Najee Harris was an absolute legend for Alabama football but another all-time Crimson Tide great convinced him to choose Bama over Michigan.

Despite all of the Alabama football greats, particularly at running back over the past decade, Najee Harris stands above the rest — at least in the record books. The now Pittsburgh Steeler rewrote the rushing record book, finishing his college career as the Crimson Tide’s career leader in rushing yards (3,843) and rushing touchdowns (46).

Oh yeah — he also helped Alabama to two National Championships in his time under Nick Saban.

Back when Harris was a recruit, though, it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that he would end up with the Crimson Tide. The then-No. 2 ranked recruit in his class was making a decision between Alabama and the Michigan Wolverines.

In the end, though, it was another member Alabama football (though not at the time) who helped the running back ultimately land with the Tide.

Najee Harris chose Alabama football thanks to another Crimson Tide legend

During an interview posted to TikTok (h/t Saturday Down South), Harris said a conversation with another member of his recruiting class, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, ultimately helped him make his decision to commit to Alabama.

As Harris tells it, the running back had flights bought for him by Alabama and Michigan but he went to talk to Tua. He asked him (with an implication that he already knew the answer) if the quarterback was going to Bama.

Tagovailoa then answered affirmatively before telling Harris “Come with me!” multiple times. Harris then paused in the interview before saying, quite funnily, “Yeah, I am going to come with you.”

Saban and the Alabama football program already owed Tagovailoa several debts of gratitude for what he did while starting at quarterback — and filling in as a freshman to save the National Championship Game. But right on that level, they also owe the quarterback for helping the program land the most productive running back in school history.
