Tennessee football has a 27 on the field at Neyland Stadium but what is the number for and why is it there for the Vols in Knoxville?
If you’ve watched Tennessee football this year, you may have noticed a unique feature on the field at Neyland Stadium: A No. 27 in an orange circle at the 27-yard line.
That’s something that hasn’t been there for the Volunteers at home in recent years. So many fans are wondering what the No. 27 is doing there for the Tennessee field.
What is the 27 on the Tennessee football field?
Prior to the start of the season, the Volunteers agreed to honor former player Al Wilson on the 27-yard line in the year that he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
In addition to the 27 being painted on the field at Neyland Stadium, there were also two plaques put on the bricks around the stadium as well in honor of Wilson.
Tennessee football: Who was Al Wilson?
Al Wilson suited up for the Vols in the late 1990s, earning multiple All-SEC honors, an All-American nod and winning a national championship with Tennessee throughout his time.
Playing in 42 games for the Volunteers, Wilson cemented his legacy as one of the best linebackers in program history, hence why the school chose to honor him.
